London, 07 Feb. 2005
— World Broadband Forecasts 2005-2015.
A new report
published by Quantum-Web, reveals that by 2015 the
number of broadband subscribers will pass 600 million
across the globe.
At present, xDSL and cable representing more than
95% of the global market are dominant access technologies
in most areas where broadband has taken hold. This
is mainly due to the fact that established market
participants with incumbents, national and international
telecommunications and cable operators have been well
positioned to introduce broadband service to the market.
Increasingly, however, other service providers utilising
the alternative technologies of PON (APON/BPON, EPON,
and GPON), FTTx (FTTC, FTTH) and Wireless (FWA, W-LAN)
and Satellite are joining the fray. By 2015 the xDSL
and Cable –Ethernet market share will shrink
to about 82 per cent from the current dominant position
market share, comments Qmars Safikhani the founder
of Quantum-Web. As wireless technologies gain an increasing
toehold in metropolitan and rural area. PON- FTTx
could provide faster access to residential and enterprises'
premises than xDSL and cable modem service.

As a viable
niche market the latest broadband technologies initially
targeting newly constructed buildings and new and
established multiple compounds to gain a larger slice
of the broadband access Mr. Safikhani added.
The fact that broadband is increasingly positioning
itself as the core of the telecommunications industry
there are number of vital questions such as where
and when broadband access technologies will be deployed.
Which technological alternatives for broadband will
find the greatest success in the marketplace? What
and where are those opportunities for broadband service
providers and manufacturers?
The report - World Broadband Forecasts 2005-2015 -
provides a concrete answer to above questions by analysing
88 countries in order to understand the current and
future status of broadband globally.
