Abstract
The total number
of broadband lines with an annual increase of 29.6%
from 231.5 million at 31 March 2006 now stands at
a throbbing 300 million in March 2007.
According to our findings, the growth was driven mainly
by the 30.5% and 31.3% increase in the number of broadband
lines in Asia-Pacific and Europe, to reach 117.7 and
95.4 million respectively by 31 March 2007. Americas’
growth was much slower at 27.4%, where the number
of broadband subscribers rose to over 84.2 million
lines by the same date.
Middle East-Africa, the fourth largest market has
shown the fastest regional trend growth. The region
is standing at an annual growth rate of 34.5% to reach
3.2 million lines by the end of March 2007.
The findings also point to
the fact that xDSL with trend growth of 27.5% passing
195 million by 31 March 2007 is acting as the engine
of broadband growth. Cable modem meanwhile has shown
a steady 23.4% growth approaching the 67.5 million
lines by the same period.
Other Technologies with a robust 60% annual growth
shows the fastest access technology with an increase
in the number of broadband lines to 38 million by
the end of first quarter of 2007.
The report
includes data for over 350 operators in 88 countries.
