Abstract
The Saudi Arabian
broadband market is experiencing significant growth,
as of September 2005 according to our estimates the
number of broadband subscribers rose to 40,000. xDSL
which is the main access technology for broadband
users controls nearly 100 percent of the market.
According to our estimates by 2015 the number of broadband
subscribers will rise to nearly 12 million with a
CAGR of 68 percent.
While the kingdom broadband
market is officially a monopoly market, we believe
the current competitive landscape in this sector is
more complex. There are a series of providers reselling
the ADSL lines most of whom are either systems integrators
or ISPs, carving niche segments in the market. These
VNOs have managed to find a niche market that avoids
direct competition with Saudi incumbent STC, by offering
alternative selected services such as selected vertical
solution for business.
More over, the competitive
advantage of new entrants has been their cut-throat
price war for IP VPNs. Meanwhile STC's Saudi DATA
subsidiary has identified its nationwide coverage
and ATM core network as its key strengths.
