Abstract
Demand for
broadband services in South Africa has been growing
rapidly, as of September 2005 number of broadband
subscribers rose to over 130,000. xDSL as the main
access technology for broadband users controls nearly
85 percent of world market.
According to our estimates by 2015 the number of broadband
subscribers will rise to 12 million with a CAGR of
49 percent.
The South African incumbent, Telekom, as the main
players in the broadband market in general and in
xDSL segment in particular, sets the pace of the broadband
market.
In this paper we briefly analyse current broadband
market covering residential sector, selected operators,
the share of broadband access technologies and regulatory
environment. We will furthermore estimate the size
of broadband market for the rest decade up to 2015.
